Lord's Taverners give boost to Swansea Storm Wheelchair basketball club
A Swansea Storm basketball club has received five new wheelchairs thanks to a Welsh sporting charity.
The Lord's Taverners presented Storm Basketball Club with the equipment yesterday after the club recently established a disabled group. Working with the Disability Sports Council for Wales the club initially ran a 10 week taster session with borrowed wheelchairs, but seeing the success of these sessions led to the full time club being established.
Gavin Williams, club director at Storm Wheelchair Basketball club said:
The wheelchairs, which are worth nearly £1,000 each were donated by the Lord's Taverners as part of their mission to help young, disadvantaged people get involved in sport.
Presenting the wheelchairs at the LC Leisure Centre in Swansea, Taverner Bruce Roberts said: "Attending these presentations is always a delight; it is what the charity is all about.
"It was great to meet the young athletes who will reap the benefits of the wheelchairs thanks to the generosity of everyone who has supported The Lord's Taverners Wales Region."
The Lord's Taverners charity was set up in 1950 by a group of friends and cricket enthusiasts. They aim to give children, particularly those with special needs, a 'sporting chance', by providing sporting equipment, minibuses, grants and donations.
The charity also helps children from disadvantaged backgrounds to get involved in sport.
